The Death of Cato d’Utique (Cato of Utica) by Jean-Paul Laurens, French, 1838-1921.
Cato the Younger, a Roman politician (95BC-46BC), was known for his oratorical ability and moral integrity. He refused to live in a world led by Caesar and tried to kill himself by stabbing himself with his own sword. When that failed, he plucked out his bowels with his fingers in front of his horrified servants and family.
